GA4: The Evolution Of Data Analysis That You Need To Know

Have you ever wondered how you could better understand the behaviour of your users online?

The new version of Google Analytics, GA4, is here to take you into the future of data analysis. In this blog, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about what GA4 is, how it works, and how you can make the most of it to boost your online strategy. Get ready to discover the data analysis revolution that GA4 offers you.

What is GA4?

GA4 is the latest version of Google Analytics. It was released in October 2020 and replaced the previous version of Google Analytics (Universal Analytics). GA4 is a web and mobile analytics platform that provides insight into user behaviour on a website or app.

What are the main features of GA4?

GA4 has several new and improved features compared to its predecessor. Some of the main features include:

  • Improved event analysis: GA4 uses custom and recommended events to track user behaviour more effectively.
  • Enhanced Data Modelling: GA4 uses data modelling techniques to fill the gaps in tracking information and provide more accurate insights into user behaviour.
  • Integration with Google Ads: GA4 allows integration with Google Ads to provide information on the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.
  • Comprehensive user information: GA4 provides more detailed user information, including demographic and interest details.
  • Enhanced User Flow Analytics: GA4 offers enhanced user flow analytics that allows you to track user behaviour across multiple devices and platforms.

How does GA4 compare to Universal Analytics (the older version of Google Analytics that launched in 2012)?

GA4 has some key differences compared to Universal Analytics. Some of the main differences include:

  • Change in data structure: GA4 uses a different data structure than Universal Analytics. This means that data is not automatically transferred between the two platforms.
  • Event Focus: GA4 tracks custom and recommended events rather than page views and goals.
  • Focus on Privacy: GA4 is focused on user privacy and allows users to control how their data is collected and used.
  • Integration with Google Ads: GA4 allows integration with Google Ads to provide more detailed information about the performance of advertising campaigns.

An important fact that you should remember is that Google announced the obsolescence of Universal Analytics as of July 1, 2023, as this free version of UA will stop collecting new data. It’s time to start studying GA4!

To access GA4, follow these steps:

  • Sign in to your existing Google Analytics account or create a new one at https://analytics.google.com/.
  • Once logged in, look for the “Admin” option in the left sidebar.
  • In the “Property” column, select the property you want to create a GA4 view.
  • Click “Create View” and select “Create GA4 View”.
  • Follow the steps to set up your new GA4 view.

In short, GA4 is an enhanced analytics platform that provides more detailed insights into user behaviour and focuses on user privacy. While it differs from Universal Analytics, it offers a richer and more effective analytics experience.
